Its all in the little things.
Im a firm believer that the zero waste movement just starts with awareness. And I believe it is truly all in the little things. Think about the things you use every day, not the big things, the containers, or fans. Think small, what utensil did you use for lunch today? did you pack your own or opt for plastic ones? Did you pack a napkin? When you go to a coffee shop do you ever bring your own coffee mug rather than getting a plastic cup? What is crucial to changing your mind sight, is thinking about where all of these disposable items, even old pens, or forks. Where did they go

No one can become zero waste in a day. But take a look around your life and look at all of the waste (trash) you create in a day. All of your disposable food containers, and body products, all of these things we use for a short period and then end up in landfills. Most of these products, for example a plastic fork, can outlive you. Meaning if you use a plastic fork as a 4 year old, that fork will still be sitting in a landfill when you die. Items like this take an incredibly long time time to decompose, and are awful for the planet. If you want to decrease the amount of trash you create, you dont have to throw your trash bin out the window and swear off all trash forever. But here are some easy changes you can make to help reduce your waste. 1.Compost! Composting is an easy way to reduce your waste. Simply putting all your compost, this means all your food of paper products (cardboard, paper, banana peels, bread crumbs, etc.), excluding meat products, into a container in your kitchen. When its full just take it out to your compost bin in the yard, and let nature get to work! 2. Exchange your paper products! One easy switch is to get rid of your paper products! swap out paper towels for microfiber clothes, and your plastic forks for metal ones! If these paper products are a staple in your home, you can still swap traditionally disposable products for compostable ones. At my University, all of our paper products from paper plates, to forks and soup bowls, are compostable! 3. Buy less make more! Try making some of your favorite products by yourself. You can swap traditional lotion for coconut oil, and make your own deodorants or soaps. This can save you money and get rid or all the chemicals. And the best part about it, none of those plastic empty bottles! 4. Reusable grocery shopping! This is a well known idea, but how easy is it to use reusable shopping bags! Think about the number of plastic grocery bags you use in a lifetime, that you can easily eliminate. Also you can order some adorable reusable produce bags from amazon, to replace the plastic produce bags at the grocery store. 5. Buy bulk! Rather than buying your oatmeal, seeds, or granola in plastic packaging, go to the bulk section of your grocery store and fill up your glass jar, or reusable produces bag, with everything from sunflower seeds to coffee. This will also save you money! 6. Love your farmers markets! No packaging, no chemicals, better tasting, and supporting local businesses, whats not to love. XOXO Tessa |
